Liver Foundation of Kerala (LIFOK), formerly known as The Liver Transplanters’ Association, was founded in 2014 with a singular and compassionate mission—to stand beside individuals who have undergone liver transplantation and to support them in rebuilding their lives with dignity.
Liver transplantation is not just a surgery; it is a lifelong journey. For many, especially those from economically vulnerable backgrounds, the burden of lifelong immunosuppressive medications, regular investigations, and unexpected hospitalisations can be overwhelming. LIFOK exists to ensure that no transplant recipient has to face this journey alone.
The organisation was founded by the late Sri K.S. Babu, its visionary first President, in Kothamangalam. What began as a small collective of transplant survivors has today grown into a strong and vibrant community of more than 2650 members, including both recipients and donors. Through persistent advocacy and united efforts, LIFOK has successfully brought the real-life challenges of liver transplant patients to the attention of government authorities and society at large. While several milestones have been achieved, the organisation continues its relentless pursuit of solutions to the many challenges that still remain.
Following the untimely demise of Sri K.S. Babu, LIFOK faced a brief period of inactivity. However, in 2018, under the leadership of Sri Chandrasekhara Pillai, the organisation was revitalised and renamed as Liver Foundation of Kerala (LIFOK). It was registered under the Travancore-Cochin Charitable Societies Act in Kottayam. Though his leadership was short-lived due to his sudden passing, his vision laid a strong foundation for the future. In 2019, a new leadership team was formed during the All Kerala Family Meet held at White City Hotel, North Paravur, marking a new chapter of growth and impact.
Since then, LIFOK has emerged as one of India’s leading patient-led charitable organisations in the field of organ transplantation. The foundation provides comprehensive support to liver transplant recipients and their families—ranging from guidance and counselling to financial assistance and access to essential medicines. It actively conducts awareness programmes, both online and offline, educating the public on liver health, disease prevention, and the life-saving importance of organ donation.
LIFOK also serves as a strong voice for transplant patients, advocating for their rights and working towards improved access to affordable treatment and quality healthcare. The organisation is deeply committed to ensuring that every patient is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
In recognition of its dedicated service and impactful contributions, LIFOK was honoured as the Best Supporting Organisation (2024) by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The foundation has also received recognition from Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) for its outstanding efforts in promoting organ donation and patient support across the state.
Understanding the need for wider reach and greater flexibility in serving patients across Kerala, LIFOK transitioned into a Charitable Trust. On March 8, 2022, it was officially registered under the Indian Charitable Trust Act of 1882.
Today, LIFOK stands as a beacon of hope—built by survivors, sustained by compassion, and driven by a mission to save lives, support families, and inspire a healthier society.
